Flavors of Windows 2000 Operating System
Windows 2000 is a network and desktop operating system. There are four products in the Windows 2000 family: Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows 2000 Server, and Windows 2000 Professional. The most powerful is the Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, special versions of which can support up to 32 processors and 64 GB of RAM. Windows 2000 Advanced Server was designed to be used with multiple processors and/or clustered processors. This is a good network operating system to use with high-end applications (distributed databases). Out of the box, it will support up to 8 processors, and 8 GB of RAM.
Windows 2000 Server (the sequel to Windows NT 4.0) is a good network operating system for small sized domains. Out of the box it will support up to 4 processors and up to 4 GB of RAM.
Windows 2000 Professional is the client product of the Windows 2000 family. It is a standalone or client operating system and is the best client operating system for a Windows 2000 network.
